M-1

M1 is the first system on chip for Mac. Apple in November 2020 released the first Macs with an Arm-based M1 chip, debuting the 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and Mac mini models. In early 2021, Apple added the M1 iMac and the M1 iPad Pro. Until now, Mac needed multiple chips to deliver all of its features, such as chips for the processor, IO, security, and memory. With M1, all of these technologies are combined into a single system on chip, delivering a whole new level of integration with amazing performance.

Unified Memory Architecture

M1 features a unified memory architecture, which unifies its high bandwidth and low latency into a single pool within the custom package. As a result, all of the technologies can access the same data without copying it between multiple pools of memory. M1 is also the first SoC to use 5nm process technology, consisting of 16 billion transistors, which gives you amazing performance.

Incredible Performance

The incredible performance of M1 starts with an 8-core CPU, featuring two types of cores: 4 high-performance cores, the fastest CPU cores in the world, and 4 high-efficiency cores that handle lighter workloads more efficiently while using a tenth of the power. M1 has a performance controller that determines where the core runs for maximum performance and efficiency.

Graphics

Apple designs GPUs to deliver maximum graphics performance. This results in a balanced system with a GPU that complements the incredible performance of the CPU complex. Typically, PCs can’t achieve this type of balance and require a separate discrete graphics chip, which consumes a lot of power. M1 is different; it delivers incredible performance with low power consumption and is one of the most advanced graphic processors Apple has created. With an 8-core GPU, M1 is capable of executing 25,000 threads at a time and delivers up to two times more graphic performance than a PC chip, while using just one-third of the power.

Neural Engine

M1 is more than CPU and GPU; it includes all custom technologies and features a Neural Engine with a 16-core design capable of executing nearly 11 trillion operations per second. The entire M1 is designed to excel in machine learning tasks like video analysis, voice recognition, and image processing, offering a new level of performance like never before.

M1 Pro, M1 Max, and M1 Ultra

Apple followed the M1 chip with the M1 Pro and M1 Max, introduced in October 2021 in the 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro machines, and the M2 in June 2022. The M1 Pro and M1 Max are faster variants of the M1, with both chips equipped with a 10-core CPU that has two high-efficiency cores and eight high-power cores. The M1 Pro has a 16-core GPU, while the M1 Max has a 32-core GPU, with 14 and 24-core variants available for lower-end MacBook Pro models, along with an 8-core M1 Pro chip for the most affordable 14-inch machine. In 2022, Apple introduced the M1 Ultra, which is twice as fast as the M1 Max in terms of CPU and GPU performance.

M2 and M3 Chips

In June 2022, Apple introduced the M2 chip in the updated MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro. The M2 features the same 8-core CPU as the M1, but offers more GPU cores, with nine and 10-core GPU options, up from the 7 and 8-core options in the original M1 chip. Later, in January 2023, Apple unveiled MacBook Pro models featuring M2 Pro and M2 Max in 14 and 16 inches, MacBooks, and Mac Mini with more game-changing performance and the longest battery life ever in a Mac. M2 Pro and M2 Max feature a more powerful CPU and GPU, up to 96GB of unified memory, and industry-leading power efficiency.

Later, Apple announced the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max, three chips featuring groundbreaking technologies that deliver dramatically increased performance and unleash new capabilities for Mac. These are the first personal computer chips built using the industry-leading 3-nanometer process technology, allowing more transistors to be packed into a smaller space and improving speed and efficiency. Together, M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max show how far Apple silicon for the Mac has come since the debut of the M1 family of chips. The M3 family of chips features a next-generation GPU that represents the biggest leap forward in graphics architecture ever for Apple silicon. The GPU is faster and more efficient, with rendering speeds up to 2.5 times faster than on the M1 family of chips. The CPU performance cores and efficiency cores are 30 percent and 50 percent faster than those in M1, respectively, and the Neural Engine is 60 percent faster than the Neural Engine in the M1 family of chips. The M3 family of chips continues the tremendous pace of innovation in Apple silicon, bringing massive enhancements and new features to the new MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac.
